"HANNIBAL" Magazine Cover Analysis
This is a Magazine cover that promotes the once new horror, thriller and mystery series "Hannibal" that stars Mads Mikkelson who plays Hannibal Lector in the series. "Hannibal" is a series that is based on the character "Hannibal Lector" who is a real life serial killer and cannibalistic person who eats other humans to satisfy his hunger. Known for his murder of 9 people, however he planned on bumping that number up to 12, however the last 3 people fortunately survived his attacks. He served life sentence and is known as one of the most dangerous serial killers (next to Solomon Grundy)
This magazine promoting the new film of the year kept a constant theme of black and red and some of the writing keeping it white, so that the writing can stand out more with the dark background of the poster and is easier to be read and it appeals to the eye more and attracts more viewers. At the background of the poster you can see that it's black. The face that is in the middle ground has a fade effect with a concerning/happy expression on his face, telling us subtly that he had done something wrong or that he had done something sinister that he is trying to hide. The magazine uses a well known actor in this, that people like and is famous in horror movies due to his facial expressions. His face also shows one eye, this could symbolize something he saw that maybe he wasn't meant to see and couldn't get rid of that image he has in his head. It could also mean that he is trying to hide something that he had done, or something on his face could be something that could damage his social reputation or could lead people to suspect him for something sinister and suspicious. His eyes are also red. This could connote that he has some evil or sinister intentions within him, or perhaps he had seen something that influenced him to think differently or that he was taken over by some sort of spirit.
His face is also all roughed up and dirty, this could show him struggling to maybe escape something or escape his past of something he previously did that possibly forced him into hiding. Or maybe he was once clean and now dirty, symbolizing his once pure spirit that couldn't even hurt a fly to a mass murdering psychopath that would stop at nothing to eat an satisfy his hunger. He also has a sinister grin, as if he was about to kick down a door and murder someone right there and now where they're standing.
At the bottom left you're able to see the bar code that is able to let you buy the magazine and read it. Located at the top of the "M" is the date the magazine is issued.
The title is big and bold, with white outlines, this makes the poster stand out of the black background and the red appeals to the eyes. The red color also connotes hunger and blood, whilst the black in the background symbolizes mystery and could potentially be hiding something in the darkness. The title of the Magazine is "Empire" which is a well known magazine for criticizing and promoting new films monthly, giving details on what's good and bad about the movie, what works well with the movie and what doesn't. Since it has opinions from different people it is a non-bias review so that consumers get a more trust-worthy sight of the series.

Tatler Magazine
Tatler Magazine is a fashion magazine that is essentially aimed towards the upper-middle class females as this is a high end fashion magazine that sponsors expensive branded clothing and jewelry. The Tattler Magazine uses famous models (Georgina Bevan) that are rich and beautiful to target the desired audience, this is because the model is their ideal body type and her sense in fashion is likable, with expensive, designer brands that are well known around the world (this could also include Gucci, Rolex and other mass, expensive markets). Tattler's demographics are mainly aimed at females; approximately 73% females of the tattler's audience are female and the other 27% are males. There main target age is somewhere between mid 20s and early 30s with the tattlers magazine audience being 39% of mid 20s and early 30s. Which is considerably young considering that the average lifespan of a typical British female would be 80 years. Tatler magazine also

the "RULES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY" gives us an idea of who the targeted audience is.
Factors that affect the popularity of the magazine could depend on a variety of things..
The magazine's sales and reputation depend on LOCATION - This is where the magazine is sold, where it's produced and where in the world it's aimed towards. "Tattler" magazine was originally founded in Britain, however during the magazines popularity growth the magazine now has different branches, offices and headquarters all around the world, anywhere from Asia to the rest of Britain. The consumer is then able to access Tattler's magazine from nearly all around the world making the audience world wide for the magazine, so the audience is not limited to the U.K. and Britain. the U.K. is also where fashion week originated and the "posh" is a British term that is used to describe something expensive or luxurious. Young females who are of middle class and higher buy this magazine to not only follow it and try to become the model that's in front of the magazine cover, but its also to show status and to say "Oh I have money that I earned through either my parents or hard earned" so they decide to buy this luxurious item almost like a symbol of their wealth. Why couldn't they buy a cheap and regular magazine? They have the money to spend so why not?
The companies house style is the way the company prefers the type of presentation and layout of written material. Here the company decided to keep more important titles, bigger, the colors that contrast the background and more in the middle.
The COST of the magazine makes the magazine only middle - class/ upper-middle class and above can afford, this is because it sponsors designer brands and products. The cost of making it is also expensive, from hiring photographers, models, designers and editors etc.
The COST of the magazine also contributes to the FREQUENCY OF RELEASE. Tattler releases new issues monthly. This is because of the planning, the photography and the actual production and editing of the issued magazine being made. It's also a $50/month subscription magazine, due to the time and effort it takes, where as a normal magazine would normally cost less the $5, because it releases weekly and pretty frequently and covers clothing and luxuries that anyone can afford.
Tattler magazine doesn't have any other platforms where it could promote itself (Like what DC Comics did with "Batman: A Killing Joke"). However the tattler magazine does promote other products and then the products promote tattler to buy their products, so the idea of cross platform applies but this is with different companies, the products that tattler sponsor are not it's own. However you do have to by tattler to see where that product comes from.
The "uses and gratification" theory states that we as consumer seek out the media that we want, so we can choose what we can do with it when we consume it. This links in to the magazine because we consume the magazine because we use the idea to vision us as he model and we also seek to look like and practically become the model in the magazine cover. We consume the magazine because we want the steps and the items and the beauty products to become the model, we want her diet, he clothes, her makeup and her lifestyle.
The magazine promotes high-class fashion tips and make-up techniques that make you more "beautiful" ideally. It doesnt give tips on EVERYDAY makeup, but gives tips on makeup that is supposed to be used for special events (i.e. weddings, parties and gatherings). The make-up promoted in the magazine cover is also expensive. The texts of the front cover are short and sharp, so that not enough detail is given to interest the reader/consumer, with lots of different ideas.
The targeted audience is Millennial people (late 20s, early 30s), suggested by the demographics and by one of the subtitles. This magazine is aimed towards more mature and sophisticated audiences that seek to look younger and more beautiful.
The title of the "Tatler" Magazine is slim and long, this could be related to the type of model that the magazine uses. This is because this way that a girl or woman looks, being skinny and long, is classified as beautiful by society.
The color of the magazine's title also has a feminine appeal as the color is hot pink (appealing TYPICALLY to females), this could symbolize the attitudes of love, lust, desire, feminism, charming and sweetness that other people want in women. Hot pink also connotes prestigious status being high above the social hierarchy. The color also appeals to the audience as it stands out most because it contrasts with the green color of the background and the white of the rest of the texts. It also appeals out of the blurred background so that it is easily recognizable. The text font is also iconic towards the tatler magazine as they don't use any other font that's iconic in their magazine.
The model is also positioned in a way so that when it's in store the model can be seen, and since she's recognizable consumer's attention would be directly dragged to her face.
The background of the magazine is also blurred. This is to drive more attention towards the actual model. Her clothes also blend in with the background, because being a fashion magazine/makeup magazine the consumer really wants to only pay attention to her face, to see what products she is using and what kind of eyeliner she uses.
The title's color is the opposite end of the color wheel then with the background, making the two colors contrast and making the hot pink color stand out more. This magazine is purely for status and aesthetic appeal towards consumers.
The model is truly defined as the princess/prize in Propp's theory, as the main attention is driven onto her face and the way she looks. The reason why she puts on alot of makeup is because we, as the audience, fantasize about her, or fantasize about becoming her, being the prize. The way the model is posing also shows of her jewelry that she wears, she also wears it as if she's proud of owning it is a must have for every girl or woman.

Analyzing a double page spread
This double page spread is apart of a music magazine cover that features 'Blink - 182' bassist 'Mark Hoppus' in the frame of the magazine cover. 'Blink - 182' is an american, famous rock band band that does sold out and worldwide tours to play their music.
The title of this double page spread is 'My Dinosaur Life'. The page's title is big covering almost all of the page. This could connote on how big he has become around the world, being able to play in one of the most famous bands in the world, playing iconic songs and being mentioned in mainstream and iconic songs such as Chain-smokers' 'Closer'. The band also makes songs for movies and gets featured in a variety of talk shows and interviews. The size of the title could emphasis the large change in the life of the bassist, being compared to a 'dinosaur life'. A dinosaur's life is usually unpredictable and sometimes dangerous, whilst being fun, exciting and unique. This links in with the idea that the bassist's life had changed for the bigger and the better.
The font of the title is messy and seems almost as if it was clawed into the page. This could connote the hectic and busy nature of the bassist's life being famous and mainstream as he is busy constantly making new songs and new lyrics to go along with the song.
The magazine lacks all of the other band mates in 'Blink - 182' (i.e. Scott and Trevor) giving us an impression that this section of the magazine is dedicated about him and our main focus should be about him and that all of the other band mates in this magazine is 'irrelevant'. In the frame of the double page spread you're able to see what it seems to look like a toy dinosaur or a photo shopped dinosaur below the bassist. Also the bassists facial expression connotes him being terrified. This could be his reaction towards to the amount of changed that is happening to his life. Below his knees is the sentence "I LOVE BEING RECOGNIZED IN THE STREET". This is one of the changes that Hoppus had experienced whilst being in 'Blink - 182' as it was unusual for him to be recognized by random people on the street before he joined the band.

Making a magazine cover
I'm planning on doing a band/music/performing and music technology type magazine. I plan to have a main picture that will be the background featuring all of the members of a band together, and then at the bottom I'd have a film type effect with different individuals of the band separate from each other as well as their instruments. The background will only have the main people in the band without their instruments. I needed to write an article for something that can go along with my double page spread for my magazine. The writing has to be relevant to the genre of the magazine that I'm going to be using.
I have also need to do some practice shots to have an idea on where my models would be and what kind of position they would be in, both complimenting and showing off their own aspect towards this band.
One of my subheadings I would think would be "The new revolution". My band needs to be a sort of rebellious band, making rock/ punk rock and occasionally pop music.

I'm going to place my models in this format (but it has to be musical related) with a little bit more writing (around 200 words) and add the 'stage' in the background of all of the band members with a little bit of writing beside all of them. Along with some informative writing. The stage has to blend in with the background. With a couple of bts shots and with the models with their instruments.
(This is for my double page spread) I'm going to get real opinions that members of the band gives me about eachother on my double page spread to make it more suiting and more realistic. I need to use a white background so it can be able to blend in with the film looking layout I have planned. I'm thinking of using a white wall in the music room, or im going to have to use the white background in the media room. |
CSP: Reveal Magazine Analysis
Reveal magazine is quite the opposite of Tatler magazine, being a magazine that people, in the lower-middle class and skilled working class can afford. Being a magazine that releases a new issue weekly, it's natural for it to be cheaper then the tatler magazine because of its release schedule (tatler releases a new issue monthly). First glance at the front page of the magazine, you can already see there is a lot that is going on with different subtitles and subheadings all over the page. This is different to the tatler magazine, this is because in the tatler magazine there is only one idea that is being put into the head of the consumer and only one thought (that thought being a fashion magazine). When in this situation the consumer is bombarded with a bunch of headlines and different ideas that appeal to the consumer. Tatler magazine is more elegant and fit for the upper-middle class and higher class as the tatler magazine has colors such as pink and purple with green contrasting with the pink and purple in the background. The purple of the tatler magazine connotes lust, beauty and desire making it suitable for the audience that it is meant to be appealed to.
The biggest panel on the front page of this magazine is the panel with Mark and Michelle, they're there in the centre and left of the magazine cover. This could be because they're both the centre of attention in the magazine and the major parts of the magazine would be focused towards them and what their life is like being in a long distance relationship. In the magazine there are also different section in the magazine (as depicted in the front cover as it is split into different panels of text with different people). Top right of the panel labelled "COLEEN" is in different colors that blend in together pretty nicely, however it seems kind of random that they decided to blend those to colors together.
Reveal magazine is more scattered around as it has many highlights and subheadings that are all over the magazine. The colors also seem random as there is a range of different colors that contrast to one another at random areas. The main title of the magazine is show to be behind Mark Wright (who is a well known english radio presenter and broadcaster) and Michelle Keegan (Mark's wife who is an english actress). Reveal is a verb, meaning to show or to uncover something that was hidden, this gives us an impression that the magazine want to show us some of the gossip that perhaps the fans of the celebraties or the paparazzi had uncovered whilst following them around in their day to day lives.
The magazine's layout almost layed out in an organized mess, rather then being completely organized. There are also subtitles in their own separate speech bubble or border. The magazine is also sectioned in random ways with the more important headlines being much bigger than all the others that are less important. The font is a basic font being big, white and bold with a red background. The red in the background contrasts with the white text that is in front of the box. To the bottom left of the page, you're able to see that the font is a white and bold font with a neon blue lighting effect surrounding each, individual character in the headline.
